As a third-generation El Pasoan, Latina, and the first woman to ever hold her Congressional district’s seat, Veronica Escobar found herself thrust repeatedly into the national spotlight almost immediately after taking office. Escobar’s border city not only encapsulates the touchmark issues of immigration and wealth disparity, but it also was the site of a racially-motivated mass shooting at a Walmart in Aug. 2019, leading Escobar to become a vocal advocate for gun and immigration reform. Before entering politics, Escobar was a English professor and worked at a pro-immigration advocacy group as a coordinator.
