Common Ground Scorecard for Terri Sewell
U.S. House
Terri Sewell (AL-7 - D)
During roughly a decade in Congress, Alabama Democrat Terri Sewell has championed securing equitable voting rights. Amid the Black Live Matters racial justice protests and increasing efforts after the 2020 election to disenfranchise voters, particularly those of color, she vowed to keep at it and to follow the path set forth by her late mentor, civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis. Sewell clerked for a federal judge in Birmingham and spent a decade as a securities lawyer at Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York City.
In 2004, she returned to Alabama, where she was the first black partner at Maynard, Cooper & Gale in Birmingham, representing local governments and public schools in developing financing for needed projects.
