Just one year into her first term in the House, Sylvia Garcia was chosen by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to be one of the seven House managers handling the first impeachment charges against President Donald Trump in early 2020. Garcia’s sudden rise to prominence reflected her close relationship with Pelosi and was a tribute to the Texan’s lengthy judicial and political experience. Garcia worked as a social worker, legal aid attorney, and as head of Houston’s municipal court system before being elected as city controller of Houston in 1998.
