Ruben Gallego, a former Marine who served in the Iraq War, has sought to champion issues affecting his fellow veterans as well as those of importance to American Indian tribal communities. His heavily Democratic and Hispanic district includes most of the southwestern parts of Phoenix, including its downtown, as well as a portion of Glendale. He opposed the Trump administration’s efforts to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border and supports the Biden administration’s approach to immigration policies. His civilian jobs have included chief of staff to a city council member, director of public affairs for an ambulance company, and purchaser and seller of real estate.
