Compare

[Retiring at end of current term.] Richard Shelby, an old-school conservative and a tough negotiator with a populist streak, has been a leading Republican proponent of simplifying the tax code and reducing government spending. Shelby announced in February 2021 he would not seek re-election in 2022. At the end of his term, Shelby will have served 36 years in the Senate — the longest tenure by any Alabamian in history — and 44 years in Congress, including the first 16 as a Democrat.
