Common Ground Scorecard for Peter Welch
U.S. Senate
Peter Welch (VT - D)
[Running for Senate.] As Vermont’s only congressman, Peter Welch continues to prop up himself as a common-sense legislator who can work across the aisle without losing the respect of his party. But he’s also managed to attract Republican support for his causes, including improving energy efficiency and lowering health costs. After graduation, Welch moved to Vermont and worked as a public defender until starting his own law firm. In 1980, Welch was elected to the Vermont Senate, becoming only the second Democrat to be elected from Windsor County.
