[Defeated in 2022 Republican primary.] Liz Cheney, a daughter of former Vice President and Defense Secretary Dick Cheney who has a strongly conservative voting record, emerged as an unlikely leader of the movement to steer the GOP away from the influence of former President Donald Trump. In May 2021, Cheney was ousted from her leadership post after persistently criticizing Trump’s behavior after the 2020 presidential election. Following law school, Cheney worked in private practice and at the World Bank’s International Finance Corp. before joining the State Department in 2002. She also served as a political analysis contributor at Fox News.
