The Maryland Democrat calls himself a “progressive moderate” who wants to protect voting rights, curb gun violence, overhaul policing, buttress the Affordable Care Act, and equip youth with job skills. He attended Baltimore City Community College, where he was co-founder of the black student union and editor of the school paper, and went on to graduate from Morgan State University in Baltimore and then from Johns Hopkins University, where he earned a master’s degree in liberal arts with a concentration in foreign studies. He worked for more than a decade in the radio industry as a local station program director and talk-show host.
