Top House Republican Kevin McCarthy has been trying to keep the peace between vocal supporters of Donald Trump and those anxious to break from the former president and return to more mainstream Republicanism. McCarthy built a strong relationship with former President Donald Trump and championed the president’s legislative agenda. He also backed Trump’s challenges of the 2020 election results in key states. McCarthy was active in Republican Party politics since his youth, including a term as head of the California Young Republicans, and later was chairman of the National Young Republicans. McCarthy worked for his predecessor in Congress, Republican Bill Thomas, starting as an intern and rising to the post of district director.
