Julia Brownley’s name has become increasingly synonymous with veterans issues, most notably those about female veterans and women serving in the armed forces. Brownley also has sought to tackle gender identity discrimination discharges, investigate instances where women were involuntarily discharged for being pregnant or mothers, and provide mental health care for Native veterans. Brownley was elected to the Santa Monica Unified School District Board of Education in 1994. She served three terms, ultimately becoming the board’s president.
