Dr. Johnny DuPree entered public service in 1987 when he was appointed to the Hattiesburg Public School Board. In 1991, he was elected to the Forrest County Board of Supervisors, where he served for ten years. In 2001 he was elected as the first African American mayor of the city of Hattiesburg, where he served for 16 years. In addition to his public service career, DuPree has also worked in the private sector and has opened several businesses: Johnny DuPree Realty, Johnny DuPree Consulting, L.L.C., and DuPree Transportation, L.L.C.
