The Peace Corps remains a special interest to Garamendi; he was a Peace Corps volunteer in Ethiopia from 1966 to 1968. Garamendi was elected to the California Assembly in 1974. He moved to the state Senate two years later and served there for 14 years, including two years as majority leader.
