Common Ground Scorecard for Joe Manchin
U.S. Senate
Joe Manchin (WV - D)
Joe Manchin, one of the last statewide Democratic office-holders in West Virginia, positioned himself as a centrist dealmaker in the closely divided Senate of the 117th Congress. Even as the state has trended Republican, backing Donald Trump over Joe Biden by 39 points in 2020, Manchin has stuck with his party while departing from it and trying to help shape it. He was first elected to public office in 1982 to serve in the West Virginia House of Delegates. After four years, he was elected to the state Senate, where he served until 1997. He was elected West Virginia secretary of state in 2000 before becoming governor in 2005.
