Jeff Merkley (OR - D)
Once known for work mostly on budget, American Indian, and banking matters, Merkley, a proud progressive first elected in 2008, spoke forcefully against then-President Donald Trump for his role in the Capitol attack, telling the New Yorker, “He inspired this attempted coup.” He’s also a leading voice on voting rights, climate change, and other progressive priorities. Merkley worked as an analyst at the Pentagon before moving to the Congressional Budget Office. He returned to Oregon in 1991 to take over the Portland chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
