At the start of the 117th Congress, Gregory Meeks became the first African-American to chair the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Meeks promised a “historic shift” in foreign policy to new relationships with countries in the Western Hemisphere and Africa. A former prosecutor and state assemblyman from the New York City borough of Queens, Meeks is one of five New Yorkers in the House who are members of the pro-business New Democrat Coalition.
