He’s also been a life-long advocate for voting rights. In 1988, Butterfield was elected resident Superior Court judge for North Carolina’s First Judicial Division, and for 12 years presided over civil and criminal court in 46 counties. He was appointed to the North Carolina Supreme Court in 2001.
