Dingell, who wrote her master’s thesis on civility in Congress, is concerned that members of Congress don’t have the strong relationships they once did. She’s concerned social media outlets exacerbate incivility by spreading strident content and reducing in-person and telephonic communication that sustain personal relationships. Debbie Dingell was well-known in Washington as a Democratic activist and General Motors executive and lobbyist before she ran for Congress, and had helped push for the government bailout of the auto industry after the 2008 financial crisis.
