Brian Schatz is a prominent voice on environmental issues who favors policies to reduce fossil fuel consumption that he sees as an immediate threat to his constituents in Hawaii. After earning a bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 1994, Schatz returned to Hawaii where he taught briefly at Punahou and was active in a variety of community advocacy groups. For eight years, Schatz worked as the CEO of Helping Hands Hawaii, a social service organization.
Schatz began his foray into politics in 1998, winning election to the Hawaii House of Representatives at age 26.
