Since becoming the first Black woman elected to Congress from New Jersey, Bonnie Watson Coleman has allied herself with the House’s progressive wing of the Democratic Party, backing defense cuts, universal government health insurance, and a mix of programs to combat climate change and economic inequality known as the “Green New Deal.” She began her public service career as a senior investigator with the state Department of Public Safety’s civil rights division. She also worked for affirmative action and equal-employment opportunities for the state’s Transportation Department before running for her father’s Assembly seat in 1997.
