Common Ground Scorecard for Alex Padilla
U.S. Senate
Alex Padilla (CA - D)
Over his close to 25 years working in California politics, Alex Padilla made history twice: as California’s first Latino Secretary of State and again in 2021 as California’s first Latino U.S. senator when he was appointed to fill Kamala Harris’s seat after she was elected vice president. Padilla counts immigration, health care, climate change, environmental justice, and creating an inclusive democracy as some of his top priorities. His budding engineering career took a detour after 1994 when Californians voted for a ballot proposition to deny social services to undocumented immigrants. The measure was eventually thrown out in court, but it inspired many Latinos— Padilla included — to enter politics.
