Common Ground Scorecard for Albio Sires
U.S. House
Albio Sires (NJ-8 - D)
[Retiring at the end of current term.] Albio Sires, the only Cuban American Democrat in the House, fled the Castro regime with his parents as a young child in the early 1960s. His attention to Cuba also fits well in New Jersey’s 8th Congressional District, which has one of the highest concentrations of Cuban Hispanics in the U.S. Sires served as mayor of West New York from 1995 to 2006 and was elected to the New Jersey Assembly in 1999 (At the time, New Jersey politicians were allowed to serve concurrently as mayor and in the legislature.)
