[Retiring at end of current term.] Alan Lowenthal is a loyal Democrat who falls in line on the party’s legislative agenda. He opposed Republican efforts to roll back environmental regulations, supports stricter gun control regulations, and wants to protect DACA. Lowenthal, active for two decades in community affairs promoting education, low-income housing, homeless assistance, and gay rights, was elected to the Long Beach City Council in 1992. In 1998, he quit teaching after winning a seat in the state Assembly, then moved to the state Senate in 2004.
