Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, a wealthy health-care executive and a daughter of immigrants from Haiti, says the progressive policy views and agenda she’s bringing to Congress are grounded in empathy for those who are less fortunate. After studying political science and government at Howard, Cherfilus-McCormick received a law degree from St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens, Fla. She began working at Trinity Health Care Services, a family business her stepfather co-founded, as an intern in 1999 and became CEO in 2010. Cherfilus-McCormick also worked a stint in a Miami public defender’s office.
