Mazie Hirono is a trailblazer in the Senate as its first Buddhist, first Asian-American woman, and the first Japanese native elected to the chamber. Her dovetailing interests in immigration and national security correspond to her state’s demographic makeup and the significant military presence—including U.S. Pacific Command—in Hawaii. Hirono served in the Hawaii House of Representatives for 14 years and as lieutenant governor for eight before running for governor of Hawaii in 2002. She lost to Republican Linda Lingle.
