Bennie Thompson is synonymous with the House Homeland Security Committee. The Mississippi lawmaker has served as the top Democrat on the panel since it was made permanent in 2005. For the past several years, Thompson has warned of the dangers of right-wing extremism and held numerous hearings on the topic. Thompson was drawn to activism and the civil rights movement as a student and joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Following college, he worked as a teacher and began to pursue a career in politics.
