Mark Takano (CA-39 - D)
Mark Takano has led the House Veterans Affairs Committee since 2019 and during his tenure the California lawmaker has focused on improving health care for veterans, particularly making suicide prevention one of the panel’s top priorities. Takano, who is gay and of Japanese descent, also has been a prominent advocate for Asian and LGBTQ Americans. He refers to himself as Congress’ first “Gaysian.” He holds a master’s degree in creative writing from the University of California-Riverside and was elected to the Riverside Community College District board, where he served for 22 years.
