Milwaukee’s Gwen Moore is a steadfast advocate for impoverished communities and civil rights and a vociferous opponent of many of her Republican counterparts and their policies. Moore’s lawmaking efforts center on strengthening social net programs like Medicare and Medicaid, reducing poverty, and redistributing tax burdens. She also has a long history defending the rights of women, mothers, and children. Moore was active in civic affairs, including as an organizer with Volunteers in Service to America. In the late 1980s she worked for the city of Milwaukee as a neighborhood development specialist. She also worked for the state of Wisconsin on housing and economic development matters.
