Jan Schakowsky is a liberal Democrat who began her career in the public arena as a consumer activist in 1969 when, shopping for cottage cheese, she found no information on the label to say when it was packaged. As a stay-at-home mom, she helped organized a nationwide campaign that eventually led to freshness labels being the norm. When she returned to work, Schakowsky served as a Program Director for the Illinois Public Action Council and Executive Director of the Illinois State Council for Senior Citizens.
