[Retiring at end of current term.] Jackie Speier survived sexual assault by a family member, being shot and left for dead as part of the Jonestown massacre, and sexual harassment when she was a Hill aide. As a congresswoman she has used her harrowing experiences to fight for causes like gender equality and dealing with sexual assaults in the military. Speier spent most of her career in public service, starting with her election to the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, followed by service in the California Assembly and then the state Senate.
