Doris Matsui, a soft-spoken workhorse, saw some of her key issues thrust into the spotlight during the coronavirus pandemic. Matsui has long promoted telehealth, which became vital during the pandemic, and has been a critic of the cruise industry, which came under fire for the spread of the coronavirus at the outset of the outbreak. Before entering politics, Matsui was a board member and lobbyist for many local, national, and international philanthropic organizations. She worked as a volunteer art docent at the Sacramento’s Crocker Art Museum and rose to a leadership position there.
