Immigration was a major interest of Lofgren’s long before the Trump administration. She was heavily involved in Democrats’ investigation of former President Donald Trump’s family separation policy. Now that President Joe Biden is in office, she’s working to pass his immigration agenda as part of a team of women lawmakers calling themselves “The Closers.” Lofgren was first elected to public office in 1979 as a trustee of the San Jose-Evergreen Community College District. In 1981, she took a seat on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, serving for 14 years.
