[Retiring at end of current term.] As chair of the Science, Space and Technology Committee, Eddie Bernice Johnson’s focus is on STEM education, climate change, and clean energy. Johnson, who’s been on the science panel since arriving in Washington in 1993, was the first woman to serve as its ranking Democrat before taking the gavel two years ago as the first woman to serve as chair. Johnson has other firsts, as well, including first black woman elected to public office in Dallas, first Black woman to be a regional director of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, and the first nurse elected to Congress.
