[Retiring at end of current term.] Richard Shelby, an old-school conservative and a tough negotiator with a populist streak, has been a leading Republican proponent of simplifying the tax code and reducing government spending. Shelby announced in February 2021 he would not seek re-election in 2022. At the end of his term, Shelby will have served 36 years in the Senate the longest tenure by any Alabamian in history and 44 years in Congress, including the first 16 as a Democrat.
