He was a colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and served as Alaska’s state attorney general. As a native of the Lower 48, Sullivan had to overcome complaints that he didn’t truly understand Alaska issues. He was aided by his wife Julie’s Athabaskan family roots.
