Marco Rubio, a child of refugees who left Cuba and opposed the Communist regime of Fidel Castro, has gained broader influence over U.S. foreign policy during his tenure in the Senate. He was elected to the West Miami City Commission in 1998 and just over a year later, at age 28, he moved to the Florida House in a special election.
