[Retiring at end of current term.] On Capitol Hill, Ed Perlmutter’s name has become synonymous with marijuana. He has emerged as the leading proponent of providing banks and credit unions with a regulatory safe harbor if they provide financial services to marijuana-related businesses in states where cannabis is legal. After earning his law degree, Perlmutter worked as a lawyer in private practice specializing in bankruptcy before he was elected to state Senate in 1994. He is a member of the New Democrat Coalition, a group of pro-business Democrats with some politically centrist leanings.
