Mike Gallagher was a Marine Corps intelligence officer and twice was deployed to Iraq, serving as a commander of intelligence teams. With that experience, defense is the focus of many of Gallagher’s legislative efforts. After leaving the Marines in 2013, he spent two years as aide to then-Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), concentrating on the Middle East, North Africa, and counterterrorism issues and finishing his doctorate work.
