Lisa Murkowski continues to burnish her credentials as one of the most powerful lawmakers forging federal energy policy and a savvy political survivor who can win despite an independent streak that may chafe her own party. She has been vocal about tackling climate change and its outsized impact on her state of Alaska. After getting a law degree at Oregon’s Willamette University in 1985, she returned to Alaska, working in the district attorney’s office and later in private practice. Murkowski was elected to the Alaska legislature in 1998, representing east Anchorage.
