[Running for Governor.] Lee Zeldin, a veteran of the Iraq War and a close ally of former president Donald Trump, has embraced his party’s conservative positions on national issues such as border security and terrorism while advocating policies of particular significance to his eastern Long Island district, such as conservation and environmental protection. One of two Jewish Republican House members in the 117th Congress, Zeldin is an outspoken supporter of Israel. He served as a military intelligence officer, prosecutor, and magistrate who in 2007 transitioned to the Army Reserves, where he was promoted to lieutenant colonel.
